STEMMEN VAN AMELISWEERD

The Voices of Amelisweerd

Amelisweerd, Bunnik, Utrecht
Theater performance July 26 & September 23 - 24, 2023

The centuries-old trees of Amelisweerd are in danger of being cut down to widen the A27. Since 1982, Utrecht residents and activists have been committed to preserving the forest.
In 1982, part of the forest was occupied, and hundreds of people took action. The occupation was roughly evacuated and 500 trees were
cut down. But sand over it? Never!
The fight to preserve Amelisweerd continues to this day. Nowadays, the forest regularly welcomes climbing training or actions by the action group Amelisweerd Niet Geasphalted.
On July 26 and September 24, we commemorated the battle for Amelisweerd in a special way. The Markiezenbos became a stage for forest creatures, activists, and artists. Climbing, singing, and dancing, they invite Utrecht residents, neighbors, and fellow activists to immerse themselves in the story of the forest and the resistance to deforestation.
What can we learn from the 1982 occupation?
What does it mean for the climate crisis, Dutch nature, and our society that we sacrifice forests for highways?
What does the forest teach us about coexistence, inclusivity, attention, care, and hope in times of oppression and climate crisis?
The voices of Amelisweerd have a lot to say on
these issues!
